Karanga Plaza Harbour Pool

About the pool

The Karanga Plaza Tidal Steps, in the Viaduct Basin, is home to the Karanga Harbour Pool and jumping platform.

The area is enclosed by pontoons, to protect swimmers and provide a visual and physical barrier for boats operating in the viaduct channel.

Free to use, the facilities include four 33 metre swimming lanes, with lane ropes and ladders for access and a jumping platform with balustrades and a grab rail for easy exit from the water.

Changing facilities including toilets and cold water showers are available at the nearby Karanga Plaza.

Key information for a visit to the Karanga Plaza Harbour Pool:

Access down to the pool is via the Karanga Plaza tidal steps and an existing marina gangway. It’s important to note that because this is a tidal area, and the pontoons that surround the swim lanes will naturally raise and lower with the tides, the gangway will be steep to use at low tide so therefore not always accessible for everyone.

  • Mobility parking locations
  • Public transport connections via the Auckland Transport journey planner website here
  • Lifeguard hours - please note these are subject to change. Confirmation of their presence will be on the safety signs at the pool.
  • Safeswim water quality information here
  • Gangway gradients / tide heights:
    • Tidal levels range between 1.5m to 4.3m
    • At the mean high-level spring (1.5m) the gradient is approximately 1 in 10.5
    • At the mean low water spring (4.3m) the gradient is approximately 1 in 3.5

  • Toilets and changing facility locations and limitations:
    • A bespoke changing shed with two booths is located on Karanga Plaza. It uses a simple design based on the standard double changing room size (1.5m x 1.1m), with a small bench and hooks. Due to their size the booths are not universally accessible.
    • Public toilets are situated 30 metres away from the pool in Karanga Plaza, one of which is to accessible standards and readily meets the needs of individuals who are independent in their personal cares. However, it is designed as a toilet with no provision if used for changing.
